Many conditions can present as an abdominal emergency which require prompt surgical treatment but the decision to operate is not always straightforward and sometimes outcomes may be better if surgery is deferred.

Conditions & Procedures

Abscess

An abscess is a localised collection of pus that can present throughout the body. These are commonly beneath the skin but can affect the abdominal or other organs. Surgery is often needed and a simple procedure but recognition of this and prompt treatment are important to prevent other complications.

Lump Removal

Benign lumps can occur beneath the skin throughout the body and removal by surgery is usually straightforward. Assessment is important as some may lie deeper in the body tissues and require further scans prior to surgery.

Laparoscopic Appendicectomy

Appendicitis is one of the most common general surgery emergencies and should be recognised and treated as soon as possible. Surgery by laparoscopic removal is now standard but complicated cases benefit from consultant input.

Bowel Obstruction

The small or large bowel can become blocked for various reasons and surgery is either indicated as soon as possible or after an interval of non operative management. Such cases can be undertaken by either laparoscopic surgery or a traditional open operation to relieve the obstruction and if necessary, remove part of the bowel.
