HPB Surgery
Hepato-pancreato-biliary (HPB) surgery refers to the surgical treatment of liver, pancreas and gallbladder disease. Although most diseases of these organs don't require surgery some cases definitely benefit and timely expert opinion is needed to guide this. An informed discussion with the patient on the risks and benefits is essential. When complex surgery is indicated, I undertake this in partnership.
Conditions & Procedures
Complex Gallbladder Surgery
Whilst most cases of gallstones are straightforward, some require more specialist input with need for open surgery and biliary reconstruction.
- Procedures: Open Cholecystectomy, Hepaticojejunostomy
Liver Surgery
Multiple benign conditions can affect the liver including cysts and tumours. Surgery can be performed when needed for such cases.
Unfortunately primary liver cancer rates are increasing but surgery can often be avoided by discussion in multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meetings and use of other techniques to treat tumours. Metastases (spread of cancer) to the liver remains common, especially from the large bowel and surgical treatment can improve outcomes significantly when appropriate.
- Procedure: laparoscopic gallbladder removal (cholecystectomy)
- Typically a short hospital stay and quick recovery
Pancreatic surgery
The pancreas can be affected by many cystic changes which are usually benign and rarely need surgery. This is needed on occasion to prevent transformation into cancer. Pancreatic cancer remains common and survival rates are greatly improved in the subset of patients who are suitable for surgery.
- Common types: laparoscopic or open appendectomy
- Usually a short stay in hospital with rapid return to normal life
Small Bowel & Abdominal Wall Conditions
Treatment of bowel blockages, small bowel disease, and abdominal wall problems.
- Focus on safe, effective surgery tailored to the patient’s condition

Patient-friendly note:
These are some of the most frequent procedures in general surgery. Most can be performed using minimally invasive (‘keyhole’) techniques, which often mean quicker recovery and less discomfort.
